Description
8000 Gallon Tank Car – Prototype History
In the steam and early diesel eras, tank cars followed a standard design featuring a flatcar-like underframe supporting an 8,000 to 11,000 gallon tank. A new design took hold in the 1950’s where the tank itself became the structural backbone of the car, making bigger tank diameters possible though the elimination of the full-length underframe. By the 1960’s, with some shippers not needing as large a tank, shorter “beer can” 8,000 gallon tanks appeared that could transport a wide variety of heavier, denser liquids including industrial acids and foodstuffs.
